Finding it almost impossible to fill my CNG tanks. I am switching over to propane however, I need some input as to where to locate the propane tank and where would be the best place to get a sealed container for the propane? I know I'm supposed to have an outlet to go overboard so I don't blow myself up.

Capn Ken,

I'm re-doing the propane tank on my CAL-31:
1. Previous propane tank was located in the cockpit behind the helm, creating an additional place to sit as well as a step when entering/exiting the swim ladder. I had to remove the locker to repair the wet cockpit floor and found I preferred the cockpit without it, i.e. the cockpit felt bigger/roomier.
2. I'm planning on putting the locker in my lazarette. This can be done to code provided the locker is vapor tight to the cabin and, as you point out, vents overboard above the static waterline. I'm not sure about the 29, but lazarettes on the 31 are HUGE.
3. Originally I was going to buy the roto-molded Trident locker (Defender has it for around $500) but instead I'm fabricating my own locker. The box is pressure treated plywood which I'm glassing.

Some links that have been really helpful for me (#2, especially on what NOT to do):

Curious where your CNG tank is mounted.

Both cng tanks were standard 4 ft welding tanks stored in the port lazerette . A real pain to remove ,refill and store .

How wide is the hatch to the port lazarette? You'll need around 14-15" in both length and width to get a propane locker in there. Standard 20lb propane tanks are around 12.5"W x 12.5"L x 18"D.

I'll measure my port and starboard lazarette tommorow. I have a standard aluminum lpg tank and I'm assuming the propane tank enclosure will be slightly larger .I would prefer a dedicated enclosure that would fit inside the lazarette .

25x13.5 27 from side to opposite side .I'm going to start looking at local second hand used boat stores .Defender and west marine are two rich for this fixed income retired sailor !

I've been contemplating putting my tanks in the lazarette. Currently they are under the starboard bunk. Looks like that's where the manufacturer put them.
Then I saw this:
Ll2.2S 1 led outboard without pockets through the hull
sides to a point lower than the locker bottom but above the
waterline,

Which precludes the lazarette idea I think. I am not an expert by any means though.
