I was guest captaining a small rental boat up in Marina Del Rey today. After a perfect sail on a gorgeous day we were re entering the Harbor and and were passed by a beautiful Cal 34.

My boat is still down with a bad case of failed standing rigging. My son and his wife came up for the weekend and surprised me with an early birthday present. They drove us up the coast to Marina Del Rey where they had arranged for a Catalina 22 rental. We were able to outsail every boat leaving the harbor. Once out into open water it was a beautiful sunny day and we just flew along. We frolicked along with the feeding dolphins and headed back in as the sun was setting. Sometimes I get bogged down with working on my boat or contemplating the next chore. I really needed this break to remind me that, damn, I love to sail.

My boat has a long story.  The former owner had a sea cock fail and the boat sunk.  I spent years restoring the boat.  At the time, I thought it would be great fun restore and it was the first few years. It took far longer than I ever expected. I had a lot of lucky breaks along the way, or I probably will not be where I am. But, as on all boats, there is always more to do.
